Wild Roads with Anthony & Corrine Top Recommendations – RV Trailer Setup

We Towed Our New Trailer Home in 50 – 75 km/h Winds… and Learned This the Hard Way

We picked up our brand-new travel trailer in Didsbury on what looked like a perfect day. Blue skies. Dry roads. No stress….Or so we thought.
Because about 10 minutes into the drive toward Calgary…
the wind hit. 50 -75 km/h crosswinds according to the weather network at the time.

“It’ll Be Fine…” (Famous Last Words)

We had:

But quickly:

  • The trailer nudged us sideways
  • Passing semis hit like shockwaves
  • Steering Felt light (never good)

That’s when we realized: our hitch wasn’t set up properly.

What went wrong?

A hitch doesn’t just connect your trailer—it balances your entire rig. When it’s not set up right:

Truck and Trailer with German Shepard
sway
weight distrib
  • Rear of vehicle sags. Our hitch ball was too high so the weight distribution was off, In our situation the tow vehicle was not level creating limited control. It was as if the tow vehicle and the trailer were having a wrestling match and the trailer was winning
  • Front wheels lose traction. With the weight not distributed correctly the rear of the tow vehicle was low and the front of the tow vehicle was high. at times it felt like the front tires were floating.
  • Steering gets floaty. With the cross wing and incorrect weight distribution we were in a constant state of over steer. I can not describe the anxiety I felt in this situation but it was far from ideal.
  • Wind amplifies everything

And Alberta wind? It exposes every mistake.

How to Set Up Your Hitch PROPERLY

  • Get Tongue Weight Right
    • 10-15% of total trailer weight. Try and keep heavier items stored over the trailer axels and and relatively equal front to back and side to side
  • Level Your Rig
    • Truck should sit level when hitched
  • Adjust Hitch Head Angle
    • Controls weight distribution. The hitch ball when connected should have trailer level and tow vehicle at or very close to normal ride level.
  • Set Spring Bars
    • Firm tension—not loose the bars should appear level when set.
  • Use Sway Control
    • Essential in wind. We can not stress enough how much piece of mind and control a sway control system adds. Highly recommend
  • Test Drive First
    • Always before towing down the highway. Identify any potential problems before you hit the open road
  • Torque Everything
